How to Capture the Night Sky with a DSLR
Have you always wanted to capture the night sky like a pro? Well here is your chance to learn a few techniques to help you impress your friends and family with a beautiful photograph of the Milky Way.
Things you need:
- Steady tripod
- Preferably a wide angle lens
- Remote control or a timer is fine
- Patience 🙂
Ideal settings for a typical night:
- ISO 3200
- f/ 1.4
- 25″ exposure
Capturing the stars is a difficult task because there is not a lot of light around you, so the trick is to open up the aperture or f-stop as wide as possible in order the camera can gather as much as possible and having a relatively long exposure. The other key component is to have a high ISO which will increase the sensitivity of the image sensor to light.
However, higher ISO = more noise.Â
So how can you counter the awful noise that comes with a high ISO? Well, there are several solutions: either decrease the ISO and increase the exposure or simply remove the noise through post processing on Photoshop or Lightroom.
Post processing is necessary in night photography as you will be able to make the images really pop out of the screen.
